Shape of Dreams Crossplay and Co-op Explained
Shape of Dreams supports up to four players online with cross-play from launch, but there is no local or split-screen co-op. Here is what changes in a party.

Shape of Dreams supports up to four players in online co-op, with cross-play switched on from launch. There is no local or split-screen co-op. The store feature list says Online Co-op, and every developer statement describes parties over the internet. If you were hoping to hand a second controller to someone on the couch, that mode does not exist.
The multiplayer facts in one table
| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Maximum party size | Four Travelers |
| Can you play alone? | Yes, the whole game is completable solo |
| Cross-play | Yes, enabled at launch; PS5 lobbies are unified with PC and other consoles |
| Local or split-screen | No, online only |
| Subscription needed | Yes on console: PS Plus on PS5, or a paid Game Pass tier on Xbox |
| Does co-op lower difficulty? | No, enemies arrive faster and hit harder |
Why so many people expect split-screen
The store description says “up to 4-player co-op” without specifying online, and roguelites often ship with a couch co-op mode. Combine that with a console launch marketed as a party-friendly drop and the assumption writes itself. The feature list on the store page is the place to check, and it says Online Co-op.
What actually changes in a party
Enemies scale up, so a four-player run is not an easier run. What you gain is interaction between builds:
- One player freezes a group, another dumps damage into the frozen targets.
- Someone pulls enemies into a single point so the party can sweep them together.
- A shield-focused Traveler like Cetus keeps the whole party alive through a bad map.
The developer’s description of Cetus is a good example: he grants shields to himself and his allies. In solo play that shield is personal defence. In a party it is a party-wide buff. The same kit changes value with the mode.
Joining a session
Cross-play is on by default, so inviting a friend on another platform works without flipping a setting. On console, remember that online multiplayer needs a paid subscription for each player: PS Plus on PS5, or Game Pass Essential, Premium or Ultimate on Xbox.
One more practical note for solo players: the synergy logic still applies to you. Freezing enemies and then hitting them with your biggest skill works in a single-player run too. Co-op does not introduce a new system; it makes an existing one more visible.
